Central Railway was formed on November 5, 1951 by consolidation of many government owned railways, along with Scindia State Railway and Great India Peninsula Railway. Central Railways covers most of the major parts of Maharashtra, southern Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka's north east part. Formerly, Central zone also included southern Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh and northern Madhya Pradesh.
Central Railway includes the first passenger railway line in India, which opened from Bombay to Thane on April 16, 1853.
